Selvage Whirlwind Block

 Looking for a project that will make a dent in your scrap bin? Stitch those selvages you’ve been saving into fun foundation paper pieced pinwheel blocks!

Sewing Machines will be generously provided for students by Bernina/ Hinkletown Sewing Center

Class Supplies:

Pattern: Your will need to purchase of pdf copy of the Selvage Whirlwind Block by Amy Friend of During Quiet Time: https://duringquiettime.com/product/selvage-whirlwind

Then, print out the template onto paper intended for foundation paper piecing (Carol Doak’s Foundation Paper, 8-1/2” x 11” newsprint, vellum, or plain old copy paper) at “actual size”, “100%”, or “scaling to none”. (I found newsprint worked well.) One sheet will be enough for one block, but you will want to print some additional pages.

Fabric Requirements (as listed on pattern):

· A variety of selvages with at least 1” to 1-1/2” of fabric beyond the selvage edge, ranging from 5” to 7” in length. Or, you can simply use strips of regular quilting cotton.

· Background: (2) 4-1/2” squares per block

Basic Sewing Kit:

· Fabric shears

· Patchwork pins (flat flowerhead pins are typically recommended for foundation paper piecing)

· Thread snips

· Seam ripper

· White thread to match your selvages (or you can use the off white thread which will be provided at class)

Rotary Cutting Supplies:

· Rotary cutter with fresh blade

· Acrylic rotary cutting ruler at least 12” long

· Cutting mat for your workstation

Additional Supplies:

· Your favorite starch or starch alternative

Optional Supplies:

· Tailor’s awl or stiletto

· Add-a-Quarter ruler

· Wooly pressing bar (the 12” size is perfect)

· Wooden finger presser

· Seam roller

Ironing Supplies:

The classroom will be equipped with ironing stations, but you may wish to bring a small iron and pressing mat to share with your table mate. My favorite pressing boards will be available for sale during class (cash, check, or Venmo).
